Writing a Speech for Senator Ted Cruz

Updated: Jun 24

“When you cut people’s taxes, it makes it easier for them to provide for their families, easier for them to provide or their kids, easier for small businesses to grow…”

That’s my line I murmured to myself in the silent halls of the Gelman Library. Line by line, he began quoting my speech precisely. The significance of this moment grew as I recalled Senator Cruz’s speechwriter telling me if a writer drafts a particularly effective speech, a senator will use three direct quotes at most. Senator Cruz used five of my drafted lines verbatim. I sat still, unsure if I should pick up the phone to call my dad or replay the speech again.

However, what I was sure of was my dream of facilitating political communication could become a reality.

Watch the speech.
